About

voxara is an independent IELTS preparation tool built by a solo developer.

The problem

IELTS preparation is expensive. Official preparation books cost $30–50 each. Coaching classes run $500–2,000 for a course. Most online platforms lock serious features behind monthly subscriptions priced for Western salaries.

The candidates who most need to raise their band score — students applying for international universities, professionals qualifying for immigration, people building a new life in a new country — are often the ones who can least afford these tools.

What voxara is

voxara started as a flashcard app with proper spaced repetition — SM-2, the same algorithm used by Anki. It grew to include AI-powered tools for the three other skills assessed by IELTS: writing, speaking, and reading.

The design philosophy is deliberately austere: no streaks, no badges, no mascots. IELTS candidates are adults with a specific goal. They want a precise instrument, not a game. voxara is built to feel like a well-made tool, not an app that rewards you for opening it.

How it is built

voxara is a solo project — one developer, no team, no VC funding. It is built with Next.js, Supabase, and ProxyAPI-backed AI models for evaluation. Core study features keep working offline so you can review cards on the move.

The free tier is genuinely useful for manual flashcards, spaced repetition, public IELTS decks, markdown notes, and basic study workflows. Pro connects the serious work: Writing, Speaking, Reading, translation, vocabulary extraction, stories, deck analysis, mistake memory, and the daily plan.
